Threshold estimation based on a P -value framework

چکیده
We use p–values as a discrepancy criterion for identifying the threshold value at which a regression function takes off from its baseline value – a problem that is motivated by applications in dose-response studies, astronomy and engineering. In this paper, we study the problem in a controlled sampling setting, where multiple responses, discrete or continuous, can be obtained at a number of different covariate-levels. Our procedure involves testing the hypothesis that the regression function is at its baseline at each covariate value using the sampled responses at that value and then computing the p–value of the test. An estimate of the threshold is provided by fitting a stump, i.e., a piecewise constant function with a single jump discontinuity, to the observed p–values, since the corresponding p–values behave in markedly different ways on different sides of the threshold. The estimate is shown to be consistent, as both the number of covariate values and the number of responses sampled at each value become large, and its finite sample properties are studied through an extensive simulation study. Our approach is computationally simple and can also be used to estimate the baseline value of the regression function. The procedure is illustrated on a motivating real data application.

We use p-values to identify the threshold level at which a regression function leaves its baseline value, a problem motivated by applications in toxicological and pharmacological dose-response studies and environmental statistics. We study the problem in two sampling settings: one where multiple responses can be obtained at a number of different covariate levels, and the other the standard regr...
متن کاملIdentification of Hazardous Situations using Kernel Density Estimation Method Based on Time to Collision, Case study: Left-turn on Unsignalized Intersection
The first step in improving traffic safety is identifying hazardous situations. Based on traffic accidents’ data, identifying hazardous situations in roads and the network is possible. However, in small areas such as intersections, especially in maneuvers resolution, identifying hazardous situations is impossible using accident’s data. In this paper, time-to-collision (TTC) as a traffic conflic...

This study investigates the impacts on government spending and its financing resources including tax revenues, oil revenues and government debts on GDP in Iran during 1350 to 1387 period. For this regards, Smooth Transition Regression (STR) model has been employed. The results show that, there is a significant nonlinear relationship among government spending and its financing resources and GDP ...
متن کاملAn Estimation of Laffer Curve in Iran: A Non-Linear Approach
Laffer curve indicates relationship between tax rate and tax income. The aim of this paper is estimating of laffer curve in Iranian economy. To do so, we have used threshold regression method. Empirical results indicate that since the tax rate is low (the threshold value is less than 0.0848) in two-regime model, tax rate and tax income have a significant positive relationship, but when the tax ...
